Facing your addiction

Facing your addiction is incredibly difficult. But it’s possible through a few methods, one being counselling.

Counselling can change lives in so many ways. From helping develop self-worth, to finding coping mechanisms for anxiety. Those who seek it deserve respect and our applause. We are lucky enough to have a client of ours share his story with us. Adding to our important survivor voices. Thank you, Billy, and keep up the fantastic work!

Billy’s story

I am incredibly grateful for the support I received from The YOU Trust counselling services. After a long period of abstinence, I found myself struggling with alcohol again. Which was severely impacting my work, relationships, and overall well-being. I’ve received counselling before and attended numerous meetings for alcoholics. But I’d never addressed the root causes of my trauma. Or understood why I felt so negatively about myself.

Billy shares his story on facing your addiction

Trusting others has always been difficult for me, but I finally felt at ease with my counsellor, Matt. This comfort allowed me to open up and share my struggles. Talking to someone about my issues and understanding why I turned to alcohol was a huge relief.

Matt listened with compassion and understanding, offering sound advice and gentle guidance on how to respond to my thoughts. Through our sessions, I learned to counteract negative and destructive thoughts with self-compassion and understanding.

The lessons and practices from my counselling sessions have been truly life-changing. I am now much better at managing my self-destructive thoughts and behaviours. Discussing and understanding my emotions has positively affected my relationships, not just with my partner but with everyone around me.

I used to be very harsh with myself, but now I have much more love and compassion. This shift has greatly improved my mental well-being and overall life. I have more enthusiasm for my work and activities, and I notice many new opportunities.

Taking care of myself has boosted my confidence and control over my addictive behaviours. I am proud to say I have been sober for over a year now. I have joined a gym and started playing badminton regularly. My work now involves helping others who are struggling, allowing me to share my experiences positively, rather than feeling ashamed or angry.

Recently, I was nominated for an international men’s award, and at 47 years old, I finally feel like I am on the right path in life.

I cannot thank Matt and The YOU Trust enough for the counselling I received. And the amazing, friendly service provided by everyone I met there!

I wholeheartedly recommend their services.
